Do any of these lines sound familiar? I’m sure they do if you’ve ever asked your upline leaders about building an organization online. There is a huge divide and a wide range of varying opinions when it comes to new school marketing strategies. In fact, there are companies in our industry that will not even allow you to market your opportunity online.
In one corner, there is the traditional way of building a network marketing business.
Traditional “Old School” MLM
The traditional way to build your network marketing business is to use strategies and methods that rely on you as the distributor growing your organization by talking to one person at a time.
This strategy has been used for decades, and companies such as Amway, Herbalife, Avon and Mary Kay have credited their success and longevity to following systems built on this approach. You will also find many industry leaders who live incredible lifestyles as a result of building organizations based on the traditional business model.

1. Lack of Understanding
The most common reason is the lack of knowledge on how Internet marketing actually works.
2. Lack of Control
From the company standpoint prospecting online is very difficult to regulate. The Internet is a platform where information travels so fast there’s no way the company can effectively monitor or police what is being said in marketing messages.
The industry itself is highly regulated and many of the product markets and niches our companies participate in are highly regulated industries as well. If a distributor begins making claims that go against or violate regulatory guidelines and policies, the entire company can be held liable. This is why many of our network marketing companies discourage Internet network marketing.
3. Conflict of Interest
For some network marketing companies and even some top ranking distributors, the marketing system and the tools they have created for their distributors and downline is a huge profit stream. There are some top earning network marketers that actually make more selling their tools and systems than they do in commissions and bonus payouts from the business itself. The meetings, the trainings, the marketing tools and the conventions provide massive streams of income.
Think about it this way…
If you were creating a six or seven figure income stream from meetings, trainings, tools and events, would you want your distributors to plug into a system that could wipe out the need for them to go to meetings, trainings, plug into tools and events?
The answer is no way!
Even if those distributors have success marketing their business online, you are eliminating a huge chunk of income from a company or upline that does not support the systems they already have in place.
So let’s talk about the other side of the coin. In the other corner, there is the new school way of building a network marketing business.
New School Internet Network Marketing
This method involves using methods and strategies that focus on attracting pre-qualified prospects and recruits to you, becoming the hunted in stead of the hunter.
Also known as Attraction Marketing, many new leaders in the industry are utilizing the power of the internet to build and train their network marketing organizations in what is being called the new global social media economy.
There are many success stories from distributors who have struggled in the network marketing industry having little to no success at all following traditional old-school offline methods, but once they learned and implemented the techniques and strategies of internet network marketing, they were able to find huge success.
Successful and profitable businesses have been birthed using both old school and new school methods. So if both methods work, which way is better?
