The basic concept of marketing is to connect the right person or buyer with the right product. Succeeding at this approach is what causes currency to pass from person to person. With social media, this marketing strategy has never been more powerful – Never.
Today the methods of marketing via print, broadcast, and other disruptive advertising methods have become “Old School”. Traditional media does have a large reach to a marketer; however, the waste is equally high. Also that it is almost impossible to truly target your audience effectively as a marketer in the “Old School” methods.
But then the Internet introduces Social Media and Web 2.0. This revolution is stirring up everything in the marketing world. Now anyone today can provide highly targeted content to the masses with very little effort.
This explosion in social media is primarily due to a few reasons:
The power now is available to both the customer and the marketer equally to distribute content as desired. In the past it has always been with the media or the marketers.
Today the medium can be completely personalized by the user and they are also able to create pretty much any content they want.
Opinions are free and fair. This is one reason why social media is of utmost concern to marketers, since buying decisions are no more influenced as much by advertisements. The traditional word-of-mouth marketing approach has grown leaps and bounds on social networks.
The Facebook user interface makes it very easy to create personalized fan and group pages with a few minor steps. Many believe this has contributed to their extreme popularity. Another reason is the social applications that continue to be developed on a rapid pace. These applications can allow users to participate together in games, sharing web links, videos and photos just to name some.
How does Facebook help a marketer?
First it is very easy for a marketer to communicate and get to know his friends better, but also others in groups that have similar interests. Then the second and even more powerful, is your ability to advertise. Very much like Google Ads, but much more targeted. With Google the focus was on the keywords, but with Facebook it is with similar likes and interests, and demographics. Oh, and at a much lower cost per ad.
Another aspect of Facebook for marketers is the use of Fan Pages. These Fan Pages can be used to promote an individual, brand, or business. And the unique thing about Fan Pages is that the “fans” have selected or opted into that Fan Page. So you have a very captive audience as a marketer.
What makes Facebook truly the strongest medium for marketers today is the way it allows you to target your communications directly to the customer segment you want to attract. There are many different ways to maximize your exposure to your targeted market allowing you to capitalize using this social medium.
The other side of the coin is the targeted market also has an ability to provide immediate feedback on your marketing actions. This could be thumbs up or down, not to mention a heartfelt comment in appreciation or dissatisfaction.
All in all, Facebook is the leader in social media and I am confident this will be the case for some time to come. If you are a marketer it is in your best interest to master this medium and maximize its potential to financially explode your business.
