Let me draw you a picture, a descriptive picture, of what a Niche is.
On the Internet, as in the ‘real world’ there are essentially only three MARKETS that a product fall into, but, within each of these markets there are an almost unlimited number of niches. Let’s first look at the Health Market.
The Health Market will include all things related to health. This might include, Holistic Medicine, Diets, Weight Control, Cooking for a Diabetic, Eat vegetables to live longer, and on and on. whatever you can think of that addresses the health of people and animals can be placed in this category.
Remember when you were in school and you had to create outlines? Well, In an outline about internet Marketing, you might set it up as follows:
1. Health Market
Dieting
Exercise
Cooing for Diabetics
Holistic Medicine
Weight Control
Next you would List the Lifestyles Market, for example:
2. Lifestyles
Sports
Hobbies
Entertainment
Crafts
Photography
And then you would list the Wealth Market, something like this:

Internet Marketing
Financial Planning
Stock Market trading
Investing
Insurance
As you can see we are now beginning to narrow down a market. But this is really just the beginning, for example. In the LIFESTYLE MARKET under the heading of SPORTS, you might further break down the list into several different sports such as:
Football
Softball
Baseball
Soccer
Hockey
Ice Skating
Toboggan Racing
Skiing
and so on. If you really want to target a tight niche, you can continue to break down each of these sections. For Example, taking the BROAD niche of Football, I might further break it into:
College teams
Bowl Games
Ticket Sales
Jersey Sales
Team Support
Fan Sites
Now, are you beginning to see? A MARKET is a VERY Broad subject heading, much like the top level headings of an outline. Under each market there are sections, and in each section there are sub-sections. You can continue to add subsections under some markets almost without limits.
When considering a ‘niche’ for internet marketing purposes you will want to do an exercise something like this. You want to first figure out your MARKET and then look into the lowest level sub-section to find a little used niche.
Right now, as we baby-boomers are reaching the age of retirement, internet marketers are looking at niches such as
Staying young after 65
Planning for retirement
Making your retirement savings last
Estate Planning
just to name a few. Again, under each of these sub-sections you can probably list several smaller, more focused sections that one could single out and devote their marketing efforts to.
What if I do a search for “Health” in Google. I get a return of “About 5,920,000,000* results” That is over 5 Billion, yes, Billion with a capitol B. I really don’t want to have that much competition, do you. This is where it becomes apparent that you really must understand what your particular niche is.
Using any good search engine you can conduct a search for your specific niche. Type in the label you have assigned to your niche, for example, under Health and staying young after 65 you might try, ‘face lifts’.
A Google search for the term “face lift” returns “About 9,290,000* results”. Ok, that is getting better, but still millions of competitors. Now add the words ‘men after 65’ and your get a return of “About 637,000* results”. Better still, at least it is under a million. But if you further narrow the results with the term ‘Caucasians” you get a return of “About 20,000* results”.
You can see through this simple example that by narrowing your ‘niche’ can put you in a much better position to tap into a market element that can earn you a good return. Understanding the difference between a Market and a ‘Niche’ is essential as a first step on your road to making your internet marketing efforts successful.
